Out and about - Venetian Villas -
Dotted all over the countryside of
the Veneto region there are villas dating from the 16th, 17th and
18th centuries, originally built as summer residences by rich Venetians.
These villas stand as a testament to what was one of the most civilized
and sophisticated lifestyles of Renaissance Italy, and some of the
villas themselves are true masterpieces of Italian architecture.
Undoubtedly, the most celebrated of these villas are those designed
by Andrea Palladio, such as the Malcontenta, near Venice, and the
Maser, near Treviso, both of which are open to the public.
