Out and about - Valdobbiadene -
The center of Valdobbiadene sits on
an upland plain located on the slopes of Monte Barbaria and Mount
Cesen. The area to the east and south-east is covered in vines being
cultivated to make Prosecco, while to the south-west, the land slopes
down to the banks of the River Piave. Together with Conegliano,
Valdobbiadene is the epicenter of Prosecco production, and so it
is appropriate that it is here, every September in the famous Villa
dei Cedri, that the National Spumante Exhibition is held.
The 'Strada del Prosecco' or Prosecco production trail starts here
and leads to Conegliano by way of all the pre-eminent production
zones.
The Prosecco Production Trail
This trail starts from Conegliano Castle and crosses the entire
expanse of hillside given over to the production of Prosecco and
Cartizze white wines before reaching Valdobbiadene, on the slopes
of Mount Cesen. The route across this hilly landscape exposes the
visitor to an ocean of vines and farmhouses, passing through several
villages that have retained their authentically rustic art and architecture.
Once summer has come to a close, the lush countryside explodes
into a rainbow of autumnal shades during the harvest season, and
during winter the area is bathed in the all-consuming fog that descends
from the pre-Alps and the Dolomites.
