Out and about - Oderzo -
Oderzo, the modern-day Opitergium, is a flourishing commercial
center located in the western part of the province. Starting out
as a Paleovenetian settlement, Oderzo was declared a Roman municipality
in 45 B.C., and the city remains inextricably linked to the ancient
past. Archaeological excavations in the historical center continue
to uncover relics that reveal the grandeur of the civitas opitergina:
the Forum, in the very heart of the city, is paved with blocks of
Eugenean trachyte extending for almost one hundred meters in total;
the house in Via Mazzini that faces the 'cardo maximus' or main
thoroughfare; the Mosaic House, as well as several tracts of paved
Roman roads. These days, the most precious finds are conserved in
the 'Eno Bellis' Archaeological Museum.
